OCA Columbus Chapter Newsletter, Spring 2007
Date: 2007-01-15
With the festive celebration of the Chinese New Year, Year of the Golden Pig, the OCA Columbus Chapter presented the first event that signifies our priority for this year. We joyfully celebrated our cultural heritage and promoted coalition and community building with our network of members and friends from government agencies, corporate and business partners, and grassroots organizations. The event was chaired by Fanny Ho and Tim Tsao, and co-hosted by the Young Asian American Professional Network (YAAPN). Over 300 members and friends attended the event. Among them were Franklin County commissioners Mary Jo Kilroy and Paula Brooks, Ohio Civil Rights Commission (OCRC) Public Relations Director Toni Ann Delgado, City of Columbus Community Relations representative Guadalupe Velasquez, and State Secretary Jennifer Brunner’s representative Katherine Thomsen. The event was supported by the America Red Cross, Asian American Commerce Group (AACG), Asian American Community Services (AACS), Central Ohio Families with Children from China (COFCC), Columbus Chinese Christian Church, John Hancock Financial Network, Kahiki Inc., Ohio Diocese Chinese Language Program, OhioHealth, and Today’s Child.

Our Chapter is the proud recipient of the 2007 Allstate Foundation Hate Crimes Prevention Grant. The selection committee was impressed with our vision for the cause and our community collaboration approach, reaching out to the many diverse communities in the Central Ohio area. The grant provides financial support for us to conduct a conference to bring awareness and advocate for the prevention of hate crimes. We will partner with Ohio Civil Right Commission(OCRC), Columbus Police Division, and Community Relations of City of Columbus to advocate for social justice, equal opportunity and fair treatment for all members of our society.

Immigration reform is very near and dear to our hearts and minds. Asian represents about 5% of the population and 1 million of the 12 million undocumented immigrants in the US. OCA supports measures to eliminate long waiting period for family reunification. OCA is one of the organizers of a national event to build coalition and formulate strategy for just and humane immigration policy. The event will be held on April 30 to May 1 in Washington D.C. Our coordinators for this project are Sam Law and Wen-Tong Lin.

In March, Wen-Tong Lin represented Columbus Chapter to participate in the annual OCA-JACL Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. The conference connects our chapter with other civil rights leaders and lawmakers across our country. In addition, Siu-Leung Lee represents our chapter to serve on the board of the Ohio Diocese Chinese Language Program for teaching Chinese in schools K-12.

The annual OCA National Convention will be held at Sacramento, California from June 28 to July 1. Our board has approved funding for five $500 grants to help our members to attend the convention. Application deadline is April 30. Please contact Fanny Ho and Raymond Wu for details.

A family picnic and commemoration of the 4th anniversary of the Historical Marker for Asian Civil War Soldiers will be coming in the Fall. Sam Law will coordinate the event. Stay tuned.
